What gets me is that XLH does have every piece of information to selflessly kill herself with the Chengying sword:
- she knows that DFQC wants to free the 100,000 soldiers in the Xuanxu realm because he promised so - if she kills herself, the soldiers will be freed, - she knows that DFQC doesn't control Hellfire anymore which makes him weaker - if she kills herself, he won't need Hellfire anyway, - she knows that DFQC needs to find a way how to protect his people because the war is coming - if she kills herself, the war will probably stop or the scales will turn, - she knows that the primordial spirit of the Chidi woman is inside the Bone Orchid, feeding on her and gradually  killing her - if she kills herself, the spirit will be freed, - she knows that DFQC made a pact with the evil spirit which is extremely dangerous - if she kills herself, he won't need it anymore.
And that's why she did it. Not only she freed him of the Heart Curse she inadvertently casted but she freed the 100,000 soldiers and saved his life from the evil spirit because colluding with it would lead to his untimely death. She wants him to live even when she can't be with him (for obvious reasons).
She, however, doesn't understand one thing: - why did he claim that he never loved her and that he just played tricks on her. She obviously doesn't believe it and evidently, she never will. And even if she eventually did believe it, it was never a reason for her to stop loving him.
And then we get the scene on the bridge in the Cangyan Sea where DFQC: - comes up with the best kind of love confession he ever could, - explains that the only way to break the Bone Orchid and save her was to stop her from loving him and that's why he lied to her and humiliated her, - thus doing basically what his father did and what she is doing at the moment.
I just... the way the realization hits her like a ton of bricks is so well told. You can see that she was already fragile and that's why she told him to stop talking. And then, he just blurts this out and it's just too much for her, too much for the mask she willingly wears. And she breaks. And it's heartbreaking, twisted, angsty and beautiful in the same time.
Wow.

DFQC is so incredibly emotionally intelligent. He hadn’t had experienced emotions for thousands of years and the last time he did he was a kid, yet he’s somehow better than a lot of other drama ML’s who are supposed to be fully emotionally developed.
Of course, he’s sometimes unreasonable and irrational. But he listens and he pays attention and he genuinely tries to figure it out. His gaining of emotions is not linear and he’s understandably frustrated and relapses sometimes. But majority of the time he puts effort into figuring out not only his own, but also others’ feelings. He tries to sort out what each emotion is exactly and why it’s there. He actually asks for help and listens to advice, from Xiao Lanhua, from Shangque, even from Jieli. And he reflects on their words and acts on them! Even before realizing that his Emotion Tree has been restored, he does it instinctually during his early time in Arbiter Hall with XLH. How rare that’s for a ML in Asian dramas?!

I really feel that the whole way Shuiyuntian is run, it really sets itself up for comedic shenanigans. Immortals breaking out of Karma Jail every other day, an autocratic Emperor everyone lies to, all those secret totally Not Gay rendezvous(es) in A Magic Painting, is Danyin competing in the Yujing version of My Kitchen Rules as she tries to tempt Changheng with more of her cooking, and the whole time an invisible DFQC is sliding through Zhongshui's private balconies without Anyone Noticing... and does he ever see Yunzhong .. uh. You know. Having Secret. Um. Rendezvous of his own?
Has anyone written a crackfic for this.
Shuiyunanigans.

Once again I'm amazed at how deep this story is. It has so many layers.
An important moment. Translation often fails in this series. And I know that in some versions, at the moment of the rescue Xiao Lanhua, Dongfang Qingcang says "how dare you hurt my girl".
Some people were disappointed that this wasn't what he actually said. But they shouldn't.
Tumblr media
XLH selflessly risks herself in an attempt to help a fugitive criminal from another tribe (as she thinks). And he's touched by this devotion of hers. She's not trying to hurt him, she's trying to save him. This is incomprehensible to him, but at the same time understandable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know that his father deprived him of all his feeling. Almost. There is one exception. Dongfang Qingcang retained only loyalty to his people and the goal of achieving the greatness of his tribe. He doesn't know how to love or be friends. These feelings are not yet available to him. But he's not cruel to those who show loyalty and devotion to him. Shangque made mistakes many times, but he was forgiven, because he's ally and he's faithful, no matter what.
Tumblr media
So the fact that DFCQ recognizes her as part of his people is a huge and very important step in the development of their relationship. This is much more important than "my girl". Because he's ready to protect her at this moment not only as his weakness, but also as one of his people. This is a small loophole for him, the only available option to feel attachment not only through her feelings, but also on his own. This is the only variant available to him and he grabs it.

Okay what if Zhongli was a Siming/Arbiter of destiny because he's all about gold and suns and suns are stars and stars are constellations, and constellations are fate.... what if fate is a kind of contract. What if this is the Hu Tao parallel that Zhongli has all along. Maybe thats why he works in Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. I'll get back to this Arbiter of Fate Zhongli theory I think I'm obsessed

The way he shields himself from her with “I don’t deserve any compassion, go away and leave me be.” gesture...
Tumblr media
...and she goes for it anyway because she’s full of compassion and love...
Tumblr media
...and he eventually accepts it with “Please, hold me and never let me go.”

Love Between Fairy and Devil spoilers.
So I just re-watched Episodes 28-32 (because I guess I like getting my heart stabbed multiple times by a searing white-hot knife) and realized…
1. The three days when XLH was in the Fuju cave were after DFQC received the nine Bone-eating Spikes, so you’re tell me there were three nights when our Moon Supreme DFQC was experiencing BOTH the Fuju Cave torture AND the nine spikes piercing his organs/ants eating his flesh/bones being cut off…SIMULTANEOUSLY??? How is this man still alive/functioning??? LET THE MAN HAVE HIS WOMAN because if THIS doesn’t earn the right then literally NOTHING does
2. Omg… *cries* so Orchid dissolves from his arms when she dies from the sword, right? But then *sob* in his dream when he finally admits to himself that he knew it was a dream and tells his dream-Orchid that he has to leave, his dream-Orchid dissolves in his arms, too… *heaving* He created the dream to experience happiness with her, but instead, it’s like he loses her TWICE *hysterical wailing* why did he do that to himself 😭😭😭 why is this so effing sadddd 😫
I’ll probably post about some more heartache later. 💔❤️‍🩹

Throughout the entire series, in translation, Dongfang calls Orchid just a little flower spirit. But in the book and in the drama, he actually calls her 小花妖 Xiǎo Huāyāo a little flower demon. It starts back in the second episode, when he doesn't know her name yet. But the funny thing is that he doesn't call her that right away. Before this she forces him to return her hair, which of course impresses him. And then she begins to explain that one can't take away someone's work, thereby justifying her intention to release the criminal from the pagoda. And after that Dongfang begins to call her 小花妖 Xiǎo Huāyāo.
Tumblr media
Of course, I wanted to learn more about this nickname in order to understand what meaning was put into these words, because he called her that until the very end, although he used it less often in the last episodes.
A few facts. The translation of the word demon in Chinese mythology is significantly different from what we are used to. By the way, the same word is called Ying Zhao. It seemed strange to me that demons turned out to be cuties, but when you learn more about the meaning of this word, you understand why you didn't perceive it quite correctly.
Tumblr media
For us, demons and devils are more similar in meaning. If we are not talking about the Devil, then devils are the same demons. But they don't in Chinese mythology.
I copied this for you
妖 yāo - demons or alternatively translated as monsters. Born when an animal, plant, or even an inanimate object absorbs spiritual energy over a long period of time and then gains spiritual awareness. Not inherently evil, although many have antagonistic relationships with humans.
魔 mó - devils or alternatively translated as fiends. Evil spirits/creatures of remarkable power and cruelty. Similar to the demons and devils of Western mythology. In some novels, evil cultivators emulate them by practicing devilish cultivation methods and committing atrocities in their pursuit of power.
Some novels consider Demons and Devils to be a single species (妖魔 Yaomo), others as distinct species (妖族 Yao race / 魔族 Mo race).
魔 is sometimes translated as "Demon", which can be confusing at times (particularly when 妖 is also used in the novel).
However, this is not all. I dug through the material and found something interesting.
妖 yāo Initially, this is a female image. A mix of two images of a woman and a baby that are superimposed on each other. The beauty of a woman who hasn't yet submitted, the extraordinary one.
Original meaning: beautiful, magnificent. Enchanted girl, charming girl. Extended: inappropriate behavior, demonic spirit. Witchcraft, demon, magic.
The words demonic, gorgeous, beautiful are closely intertwined in the meaning of this word. This is a demoness, a witch, a sorceress.
Other translation variants are abnormal, bizarre, phenomenon, goblin, evil, magnificent, charming, fascinating.
I believe this is important that it's a female image, and not just a demon. So Dongfang admits her feminine essence.
I think that the closest thing to European culture is the image of a witch, or rather even a sorceress. Beautiful, rebellious, dangerous, powerful. Like Triss and Yennefer from the Witcher, if you're familiar with this universe.
Tumblr media
So it's on the verge of a compliment and an insult. Some women are offended when they are called witches, while others are flattered. Maybe this is another reason why Orchid interrupts him so abruptly and tells him not to distract her. Not only because he says that she has features of the moon tribe, but also because he uses such an address to her. This is a curious question. But it's debatable.
Also, it's perceived as the opposite of a fairy. Fairy and sorceress, beautiful and sweet against beautiful but wicked.
I also found an agave plant, one of the varieties of which includes the name demon. 妖炎 (yāo yán Demon's flame). It has spikes. Considering that Orchid is a plant, this adds a new meaning, the orchid with thorns.
Tumblr media
Anyway, it's pity that in the English version they refused to use this nickname, because I think it adds more colors to the relationship between Lanhua and Dongfang.
